Ebonyi launches free prostate screening, treatment and surgery programme
The Ebonyi State Government has launched a free medical programme providing screening, treatment and surgical intervention for men with prostate-related conditions.
Governor Francis Nwifuru launched the initiative at a general hospital in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, with the programme particularly targeting men aged 40 and above.
Nwifuru, represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof Emmanuel Echiegu, described the initiative as the state’s first healthcare programme specifically focused on men.
Eight prostate surgeries already performed
Medical officer Dr Ifeanyi Edeaja said eight telescopic prostate surgeries had already been completed under the programme without reported deaths or serious complications.
He said screening, medical tests and surgery would be provided free to eligible patients.
According to officials, procedures that may otherwise cost around N2 million, alongside tests that can carry substantial additional costs, are being funded for eligible beneficiaries.
Separate local reporting says the exercise is intended to provide treatment to about 1,000 beneficiaries, with provision for surgeries for patients whose conditions require them.
Officials urge men to get checked
Ebonyi Commissioner for Health Dr Moses Ekuma said the state had also expanded health-insurance coverage for vulnerable residents.
Health officials urged men, particularly those aged 40 and above, to undergo appropriate medical assessments rather than waiting until symptoms become severe.
Officials stressed that early assessment of prostate-related problems can allow health professionals to identify conditions before complications become more difficult to manage.
The intervention covers prostate-related conditions generally and should not be described as solely a prostate-cancer programme.
