Falz and Mr Macaroni features in Chude Jideonwo’s documentary on police brutality (Video)

Published

on

Chude Jideonwo, the media personality, has come through with his documentary titled ‘Awaiting Trial’.

The project, which is up for free five-day screening on YouTube, addresses the struggles of three families to find those they lost to police brutality.

It also “presents the devastating ramifications of the injustice of the Nigerian Police, not just in terms of justice and fairness, but in terms of destroying families, upturning mental balance, and creating an environment and culture of fear.”

The project features top figures who led the #EndSARS protest against police brutality in October 2020 including Falz, Mr Macaroni, and Rinu Oduala.

Speaking on the project, Jideonwo said: “It’s taken a lifetime of visioning and two years in production, but finally, my life’s work in the media has led me into a new extension as a filmmaker.

“We have launched an international factual film studio with offices in Lagos, London and New York – and we have announced our first film, ‘Awaiting Trial’, that tells the story of the historic #EndSARs protests, police brutality and Nigeria’s deadly criminal justice system”.

The 75-minute project has continued to receive commendations since its release on Tuesday.

In an Instagram post, Chimamanda Adichie, the renowned author, said the project is “significant and deeply moving”.

“Chude Jideonwo has made a film that is important, necessary and deeply moving. We know the rot is deep, we know the soul of Nigeria is at stake, and yet to see it so starkly presented, to hear from families destroyed by an inhumane and incompetent Nigerian state, feels newly devastating,” she wrote.

“We need change. We need humanity. We need real justice.”

Sabinus, the renowned content creator popularly known as Mr Funny, has recently addressed the allegations of domestic abuse and mistreatment towards his wife, breaking his silence on the matter.

Cutie Julls, a controversial blogger, made claims on Instagram that the comedy skit maker has been physically harming his spouse.

Despite lacking evidence, the gossip page criticized Sabinus for his actions towards the mother of his child, especially considering his respected status as a mentor in Nigeria.

“BUT WHY DOES S@B!NUS LIKE BE@TING HIS IYAWO THO? MEN!! JUST WHEN YOU THINK ONE IS BETTER,.., BOOM THEY DISAPPOINT YOU,” the blog wrote.

Contrary to the accusations, the comedian stressed the fact that his wife lives in a western nation, where she has immediate access to the police if the allegations were indeed valid.

In his words, “How can I lay my hands on a woman that stays in UK v..:11 Omo una really funny for una this country o !! She has been in the UK for two years now Omo na wa o.”

‘Police have no role in debt recovery’ — lawyer faults Portable’s arrest

Published

Pelumi Olajengbesi, the Abuja-based legal practitioner, has tackled the police over the arrest and detention of singer Portable over debt allegations.

Portable was arrested by the Lagos state police command for allegedly failing to pay the debt he incurred after purchasing his G-Wagon from a car dealer.

The ‘Zazoo Zeh’ hitmaker was said to have bought the vehicle worth N27 million but paid only N13 million.

Portable allegedly refused to pay the remaining N14 million and whenever the car dealer requested his money, he always claimed the vehicle was having issues.

The singer also jumped over a gate while attempting to evade arrest. He was however caught and forcibly carried by four police officers into a waiting vehicle.

Reacting via Facebook on Wednesday, Olajengbesi said the method of debt recovery employed by the police “blatantly disregarded the country’s laws”.

The lawyer, who represents celebrities like D’banj, Moses Bliss, and Mercy Chinwo, also argued that “indebtedness is not a criminal offense, even the Nigerian government has debts”.

“Although Portable may be troublesome, his arrest and the method of debt recovery employed by the Nigerian Police Force is a blatant disregard to our laws,” he wrote.

“This highlights the deteriorating state of the Nigerian Police force. It’s crucial to note that indebtedness is not a criminal offense, even the Nigerian government has debts.

“The courts have consistently emphasized that the police should refrain from involvement in civil matters such as debt recovery or contractual disputes, unless there are allegations of fraud, such as obtaining under false pretenses, cheating, or criminal breach of trust.

“Section 32(2) of The Police Act 2020, arrests based solely on civil wrongs or breaches of contract are expressly prohibited.

“The Nigerian Police Force reducing its Esteem Globally everyday. And to Portable, resisting arrest is an offence on its own.”
