UTME: JAMB orders arrest of parents found at CBT centres

Published

on

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has asked Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre owners to ensure the arrest of any parent loitering around their facilities during the 2024 Unified Tertuiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) exercise.

The 2024 UTME is scheduled to commence on April 19 and end on April 29.

Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB registrar, spoke at the final briefing of the CBT centre owners which was held virtually on Wednesday.

He said the directive to arrest meddlesome parents became necessary following their intrusive disposition during the previous UTMEs.

Oloyede said any parent who loiters around exam centres would not only be arrested but their ward would be disqualified.

He said it has been discovered over time that many of these intruding parents facilitate exam infractions.

The registrar said some miscreants disguise themselves as parents to infiltrate the centres and perpetrate infractions.

JAMB also directed security operatives to work with the centres to apprehend any meddlesome parent.

“Going by the extant national policy on education, a candidate for the examination must have attained the age of 17 years,” he said.

“It is evident that these parents had not allowed their wards to pass through the classes as defined in the document, hence, the determination to follow their wards to the examination venue to compromise examination officials.

“At any rate, it is clear to any discerning observer that these parents deserve to be sanctioned as they had obviously ‘smuggled’ underage children into the ranks of those scheduled to sit the examination.”

Oloyede appealed to centre owners to consider their assignment a national engagement, not a purely profit-driven venture.

He expressed shock over multiple intelligence showing how CBT centres have been making efforts to compromise the board’s staff, especially with the offer of accommodation.

He asked why they would want to do that when they constantly complain that what is paid them is not enough.

The registrar said the centres should not hesitate to expose any JAMB staff member who asks for such favours as the board had sufficiently paid its staff for the exercise in line with government regulations.

He informed the participants that the board had deployed state-of-the-art technologies to check all infractions, collaborations, and other unsavoury acts at variance with its code of operations.

Ekiti students protest, demand justice for corps member killed by police

The Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU), on Tuesday, protested after a corps member from Ekiti was allegedly gunned down by a police officer in Ogbomoso, Oyo.

Last week, students of Ladoke Akintola University Of Technology (LAUTECH) called out a police officer for allegedly firing shots at some of their colleagues who were celebrating their graduation.

Damilola Iyanda, the deceased corps member serving in Ibadan, was said to have attended the convocation party of Oluwafemi Iyanda, his brother, when the incident happened.

Oluwafemi said his brother was confirmed dead at the LAUTECH teaching hospital.

“We were at a lounge in the Under-G area for a convocation party around 2am when we heard that some people were fighting outside,” Iyanda was quoted as saying.

“When we discovered that the place was getting rowdy, we stepped out only to see policemen dispersing the crowd and shooting directly at the people.

“I sustained bullet wounds, but my brother, who came for my convocation, was shot in the head. He was confirmed dead at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital and was taken to the mortuary.”

Benjamin Adekunle, FESSU national president, called for an investigation into the killing of the corps member with a view to bringing the perpetrator to justice.

Adekunle led FESSU members to the Ekiti state house of assembly complex in Ado Ekiti.

Members of the union carried placards and sang solidarity songs in a peaceful protest to demand justice over the killing of the corps member.

Adekunle said the protest was to call the attention of Adeoye Aribasoye, Ekiti state assembly speaker, to ensure the family of the deceased is compensated.

“We demand a swift investigation into this matter and the culprit should be brought to book. We demand for compensation for the family of the deceased,” he said.

“We also demand comprehensive medical treatment for his brother who sustained a gunshot injury. He is at home and his health is deteriorating.

“We demand an end to police brutality in Nigeria. Police should be our friend, save us and not kill us.

“We have come to the House of Assembly today to speak with the Speaker to liaise with his counterpart in Oyo State for swift justice for Iyanda Damilola and Iyanda Oluwafemi.

“They are from Ekiti State and raised and brought up in Ogotun Ekiti.”

Reacting to the protest, Aribasoye condemned the “unprofessionalism of the police officer who allegedly murdered the corps member”, describing it as “senseless”.

“We express our condolences to the family and we condemn the killing and unprofessionalism of the police officer who murdered one of us, a youth from Ekiti State who is also serving his fatherland in cold blood,” he said.

“We condemn it and the House will be sitting. We will have a position during our plenary. Our resolutions will be passed and I know the House will condemn it. It is so unfortunate his life was cut short.”

Murjanatu Zubairu, a 400-level female student of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) who was declared missing on Friday, has died in a car accident along the Lugbe – Airport Road, Abuja.

The Department of Arts Education student was said to have left home for school but was declared missing until Monday — when she was found dead.

According to Daily Trust, Zubairu Yewuti, the student’s uncle, said the girl’s parents had called him to know her whereabouts after efforts to reach her telephone failed.

The family had reported the missing girl to the university management and security agencies while requesting public information about her whereabouts.

Yewuti, who is also a former vice chairman of Kwali Area Council of the FCT, however, said the family discovered that she died in a road accident last Friday.

The uncle also revealed that the remains of Murjanatu have been deposited at the UniAbuja Teaching Hospital morgue.

“They visited the mortuary at the University of Abuja, Teaching Hospital where her corpse was found,” he said.

Yewuti added that the family is arranging to retrieve the student’s body from the mortuary for proper burial.

Sunday Ajokotola, a commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said the accident occurred at about 8 pm and involved a Toyota Sharon bus near the Dunamis Church along the Airport Road.

Ajokotola said the accident claimed the lives of four persons including the student.

“Before our rescue team arrived at the scene, six people among the 10 inside the bus that sustained burns were rescued by the Airforce personnel who were treated in their hospital,” the FRSC commander said.

“Our men arrived at the scene and evacuated the four others including a female that got burnt beyond recognition to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital’s morgue in Gwagwalada on that same Friday night.”
