The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says its operatives have intercepted a gas tanker in Abuja, the nation’s capital, loaded with 511 jumbo sacks of cannabis sativa weighing 4,752kg.

Femi Babafemi, NDLEA spokesperson, in a statement on Sunday, said the illicit drug was loaded into the tanker in Ondo state.

Babafemi said four suspects — Efe Abel Mikel, Ebigide Cyril, Ejechi Monday and Friday Benson Chukwudi — were arrested in connection with the seizure.

Babafemi said the operatives also smashed an international drug syndicate with networks in Nigeria, South Africa and Thailand.

He said five members of the syndicate were arrested in a two-week intelligence-led operations in Lagos, Abia and Anambra states.

“The unravelling of the drug cartel started on Sunday 20th April when their cargo of four big suitcases arrived at the NAHCO shed on an Air Peace airline flight from Johannesburg, South Africa,” the statement reads.

“After days of close monitoring and investigation, the first suspect, Umeh Chisom Peter was arrested on Wednesday 24th April after he showed up to pick two of the suitcases containing Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis owned by a Thailand-based member of the syndicate, Obum Michael.

“The consignment of four parcels was concealed in false bottoms of the two suitcases, while the four suitcases contain a total of 17.6 kilograms of Loud and drug candies.

“Another member of the syndicate, Mrs Chiwendu Uche Ugbe whose South Africa-based husband, Aloytus Uche Ugbe sent some of the consignments, was traced to Anambra state where NDLEA officers arrested her on Saturday 27th April while attempting to collect the drug parcels sent to her by her husband.”

Babafemi added that two other suspects – Onyejakor Francis Chimezie and Naaji Valentine Chukwukere – with links to the cartel were also arrested in parts of Lagos on April 29.

He said their arrest led to another operation in Abia state where one Chinazo Osigwe was arrested when she was to pick up some parcels containing illicit drugs sent by her husband, Osigwe Chidiebere Anthony, who equally operates from South Africa.

The NDLEA spokesperson said two suspects – Aminu Umar and Anas Umar — were arrested in Kaduna with 207.1 kg of cannabis sativa in their house on April 29.

He also said operatives arrested one Suleiman Usman, a 51-year-old ex-convict, in Osun state.

He said the suspect is currently facing trial for another drug offence at the federal high court in Osogbo, the state capital.

“At the time of his latest arrest at Okinni town, Suleiman was found in possession of 4.4 grams of cocaine, 28.5kg of cannabis sativa, 20 tabs of rophynol weighing 6.2 grams and 812 pills of tramadol,” Babafemi said.

“The following day, Thursday 2nd May, NDLEA operatives at Agbara checkpoint, Seme border, Badagry Lagos intercepted a Toyota Camry car marked KJA 825 FT conveying 113 jumbo parcels of cannabis with a total weight of 64kg. The driver, Charles Amoni, 45, was promptly arrested.

“In Bauchi state, NDLEA operatives on patrol along Bauchi-Jos road arrested one Clement Chukwuka with 595 bottles of codeine; 38,260 pills of opioids such as tramadol, rohypnol and diazepam, while another suspect, Friday Ibochi was nabbed at NDLEA checkpoint, Aloma junction, Otukpa, Benue state on Tuesday 30th April with 66 blocks of cannabis weighing 33kg.

“Similarly, in Bayelsa, Ifeanyi Stanley was arrested with 12kg of the same substance at Swali Jetty, Yenagoa.”

Buba Marwa, NDLEA chairman, commended the officers for their outstanding feats in the past weeks.

Marwa encouraged them to intensify their war against drug abuse (WADA) advocacy across the country.

A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday ordered a 30-year-old man, Garba Aliyu, to sweep the court premises for three weeks for stealing women’s purse.

Aliyu was convicted and sentenced after he pleaded guilty to theft. The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, said the convict’s plea had saved the court the pains of a prolonged prosecution, adding that the punishment would have been more severe if he had not pleaded guilty.

Emmanuel said that in arriving at the sentence, the court took into consideration the fact that the convict was a first time offender who was remorseful. He also advised him to be of good behavior, stressing that the court frowned at acts of violence.

“Desist from such acts in future and become a better citizen and human being,’’ he advised.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that on May 7, the convict criminally trespassed into the shop of one Adanna Ebuka located at Kano Road along Ahmadu Bello Way Kaduna.

Leo said that the convict went into the shop and stole a purse belonging to the complainant while pretending to buy a loaf of bread. He added that during police investigation, the said purse was recovered from the convict.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

Nigerian singer Mayorkun has publicly responded to the arrest of controversial influencer Nicki DaBarbie, strongly denying her allegations of misconduct.

In a recent tweet, the artist expressed his disbelief at the accusations and announced his intention to pursue legal action against DaBarbie, despite her current detention.

Mayorkun clarified that he has never encountered Nicki DaBarbie in person and was entirely unaware of her existence until the allegations surfaced.

Addressing the serious accusation that he and fellow artist Skiibii attempted to spike her drink for ritualistic purposes, Mayorkun emphasized his innocence and condemned the ease with which such claims spread online.

Reacting to the allegation, Mayorkun said; “You know, I was going to let this remain as a court case but when I checked the comments under some of the blogs where these ridiculous allegations were posted, I was quickly reminded of how gullible most people are on the internet and how they are ready to run along, spreading any negative news without any form of clarity.

“Just for the record, I never met that person on the said day, still never seen that person till this day, never knew about that person’s existence not until those allegations came up.. yet she claimed I put ‘something’ in her drink.
A lot of people believed that story and you think I’ll let this libellous claim fly? Hell fucking NO!

“I took this time off because I didn’t want to act out based off of emotions, because if I did; I’ll definitely act out of character and that is not who I am.

“For weeks; I’ve been getting calls from brands I work with, colleagues, friends & family about this rubbish and you know what makes it worse? You social media commentators, internet police, even people I used to think I’m cool with.. scrambling for the tiniest bit of clout and relevance, cluelessly jumping on anything not bothered if it’s someone’s life or career on the line; it might be yours tomorrow.

“I wanna re-instate, I have never seen this person before even as I am typing this! I still haven’t set my eyes on this person.. Like what else can I say? How else can I prove this?

“There’s no need for me to ask for an apology where I won’t get any. I just needed to say this publicly and get it off my chest.. cos if it was a case of ‘cancellation’ as many people are quick to do, I for don go back to dey find work for bank.

“But as they didn’t wait to hear my side of the story before they slandered my name, I would keep the same energy and not listen to anyone’s opinion while I press full charges.. even though I’m aware she’s remanded in prison at the moment but not on my own charge.. YET!”
