Five men remanded over ‘Tinubu Must Go’ T-shirts in Borno

Five men have been arrested, charged and reportedly remanded in Borno State following allegations connected to the printing and wearing of T-shirts carrying the inscription “Tinubu Must Go.”

The men were identified in a First Information Report as Baba Aji Gremami, Mustapha Abba Yemen, Abbacha Mohammed Ali, Adam Umar Gubio and Abdulhamid Mohammed.

According to the FIR dated September 29, the Borno State Police Command alleged that the five men conspired to print and wear the T-shirts with the intention of causing a breach of public peace around West End Roundabout in Maiduguri.

Amnesty International criticised the arrests and called for the men’s release, arguing that peaceful expression of political opposition is protected.
The rights organisation disputed the authorities’ basis for detaining the men and called on officials to uphold freedom of expression and association.
As of BusinessDay’s report on Wednesday, the Borno State Police Command had not issued a separate public statement addressing the arrests beyond the police document reported by the media.

The case has attracted attention because of the political message displayed on the T-shirts and the broader question of how Nigerian law applies to peaceful political expression.
