Lagos traders protest alleged involvement of Chinese nationals in retail trading

Some traders at the Lagos Trade Fair Complex have protested against what they described as the growing involvement of Chinese nationals in retail trading.

The protest took place at markets within the complex along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

Videos from the demonstration showed traders carrying placards and calling for Chinese nationals to stop selling goods directly to retail customers.

The protesters alleged that some Chinese businesses originally operated primarily as wholesalers but have increasingly moved into retail, putting them in direct competition with Nigerian traders.

One trader involved in the protest argued that Chinese businesses have an advantage because of their direct access to manufacturers and suppliers in China.

The protesters also alleged that some foreign traders obtain customers’ contact information from waybills and subsequently approach them directly with lower-priced offers.

They claimed the practice was making it increasingly difficult for some local traders to compete.

The protesters stressed that they were not calling for violence or the destruction of Chinese-owned businesses, shops or warehouses.

Instead, they said their demand was for authorities to address what they consider unfair competition within the retail segment of the market.

The protest adds to a broader debate over the participation of foreign-owned businesses in Nigeria’s domestic retail sector and the protection of local traders.
