Ronaldo named in Jorge Jesus’ first Portugal squad for Nations League

Cristiano Ronaldo has been included in Portugal’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures as new head coach Jorge Jesus begins his tenure with the national team.

The 41-year-old captain was named in Jesus’ first 25-man squad following his appointment as Portugal coach after the 2026 World Cup.

Jesus replaced Roberto Martinez, who stepped down after Portugal were eliminated by Spain in the last 16 of the tournament.

Ronaldo remains international football’s record goalscorer, with 146 goals in 233 appearances for Portugal.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner had previously indicated that the 2026 World Cup would be his last appearance at the tournament, while also suggesting that the current period could be among the final stages of his playing career.

However, Jesus said selection would be based primarily on performances rather than reputation.

Portugal begin their Nations League campaign against Wales in Lisbon on September 24.

They will then travel to Norway on September 27 and Denmark on October 1 before hosting Norway in Porto on October 4.

Other prominent players selected include Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, Vitinha, João Neves, Nuno Mendes and Rafael Leão.

Fabio Silva has also returned to the squad, while João Palhinha has been recalled after an extended absence.

Portugal enter the competition as defending Nations League champions after winning the tournament in 2025.
