Chelle says Super Eagles ready for Madagascar AFCON qualifier

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle says Nigeria are ready for the challenge of Madagascar as they begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Nigeria host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo in their opening Group L fixture.

Speaking ahead of the match, Chelle acknowledged the pressure that comes with managing the Super Eagles but said his players are focused on starting the campaign strongly.

The coach said Nigeria must avoid repeating the poor start that affected the team during the previous World Cup qualifying campaign.

He stressed that winning the opening game would help establish momentum and confidence for the remaining qualifiers.

Chelle also warned his players against underestimating Madagascar, pointing to the Barea’s 2-0 victory over Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

He said his players were mentally prepared and described Madagascar as a team capable of making the contest difficult.

Nigeria have been affected by injuries ahead of the fixture, but Chelle said the squad has enough depth to cope with the absences.

He also addressed goalkeeper Maduka Okoye’s delayed arrival, explaining that Udinese had requested permission for the player to remain with the club for an event before reporting to national-team duty.

The Super Eagles will next travel to face Guinea-Bissau after the Madagascar fixture.
