Top 10 most expensive football transfers in history – Report

Football’s transfer market has entered a new era of extraordinary spending, but one name continues to stand alone at the top.

As reported by BBC Sport on Wednesday, Neymar’s £200 million move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 remains the biggest transfer fee in football history, almost a decade after it sent shockwaves through the sport.

The Brazilian superstar’s transfer changed the economics of elite football. PSG activated his release clause and made Neymar the first player to break the £200m barrier, a figure that seemed almost impossible at the time.

But the gap behind him has been shrinking.

Kylian Mbappé ranks second, with his move from Monaco to PSG eventually costing around £163 million. The French forward’s transfer was another landmark deal for PSG, who effectively occupied the top two positions in the all-time ranking.

Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho sits third.

His 2018 move to Barcelona was worth around £142 million, including add-ons, after the Catalan club finally secured the midfielder following months of negotiations.

Then came another wave of record-breaking deals.

Alexander Isak’s £125 million transfer to Liverpool in 2025 put the Swedish striker among the most expensive players ever. Just a year later, the list was shaken again when Enzo Fernández moved from Chelsea to Manchester City for £125 million, putting him level with Isak.

The spending did not stop there.

PSG winger Bradley Barcola reportedly commanded a fee of around £123 million in 2026, while Chelsea paid approximately £117 million for Morgan Rogers. Florian Wirtz’s move to Liverpool was also worth around £116.5 million, placing the German midfielder among the ten most expensive players ever.

Manchester City then added another huge deal to the list with Elliot Anderson, whose 2026 transfer from Nottingham Forest was reported at approximately £116 million.

Completing the top ten is João Félix, whose 2019 move from Benfica to Atlético Madrid cost around £112.9 million.

The figures tell a remarkable story about how football has changed.

A £100 million transfer was once considered almost unimaginable. Today, clubs are regularly approaching and sometimes surpassing, that figure for elite young talent.
