Umahi says Peter Obi is ‘not better than me’, backs Tinubu for 2027
Minister of Works Dave Umahi has rejected suggestions that Peter Obi is politically or professionally superior to him, saying both men can be compared on their backgrounds, intellectual capacity and records in public office.
Umahi spoke in Benin City during the Federal Government’s “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event.
The minister said he had reflected on comments suggesting Obi was not his “match” and questioned the basis for such a comparison.
Umahi, who previously served as governor of Ebonyi State, argued that comparisons should consider their records as governors, contributions to the South-East and other aspects of public service.
He also reiterated his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid and said, in his view, it was not yet the South-East’s turn to produce the president.
Umahi said he believed an Igbo president would emerge in the future but maintained that he currently supports Tinubu continuing in office.
His comments form part of the continuing political debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, in which Obi is a candidate.
Umahi also used the event to discuss Federal Government plans for the Benin-Asaba Road, saying Tinubu had directed that the 136-kilometre dual carriageway be redesigned using reinforced concrete pavement
