One reported dead as tanker inferno razes shops, vehicles in Cross River
At least one person has reportedly died after a petroleum tanker overturned and burst into flames near the Odukpani Local Government Secretariat in Cross River State.
The incident occurred early on Sunday after the tanker, which was carrying petroleum products, was involved in a road accident and overturned.
The resulting fire spread to nearby shops, buildings and vehicles.
The tanker driver was trapped during the incident but was rescued and taken to hospital for treatment.
Cross River State Police said officers from the Odukpani Division were deployed to secure the area while emergency responders worked to control the fire.
Vanguard later reported that one death had been confirmed and another person was seriously injured.
A number of shops and vehicles were also affected.
Earlier reports from the scene had said no death had yet been officially confirmed, showing that casualty information was still developing as emergency operations continued.
Police urged residents and motorists to stay away from the immediate area to allow firefighters and other emergency personnel unhindered access.
Authorities said additional information would be released as details were verified.
