Lewandowski breaks Ronaldo record as oldest Nations League hat-trick scorer
Robert Lewandowski has surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo to become the oldest player to score a hat-trick in UEFA Nations League history.
The Poland captain achieved the feat during his country’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Romania in Warsaw.
Lewandowski scored in the 24th, 47th and 86th minutes as Poland secured their first victory of the current Nations League campaign. UEFA confirmed the hat-trick in its match coverage.
The striker was 38 years and 42 days old when he completed his treble.
Ronaldo previously held the record after scoring three goals for Portugal against Switzerland in the Nations League semi-final in 2019 at the age of 34 years and 120 days.
The performance came during Lewandowski’s record-extending 170th appearance for Poland and took his international tally to 92 goals.
It was also his seventh hat-trick for the Polish national team.
Lewandowski opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Romania were reduced to 10 men.
He added another shortly after half-time before completing his hat-trick late in the match.
Poland’s other goals came through an own goal, Piotr Zieliński and Jan Bednarek.
The achievement adds another longevity record to Lewandowski’s international career and places him alongside Ronaldo among the most prolific European international goalscorers.
Lewandowski will, however, miss Poland’s next Nations League match against Bosnia and Herzegovina after receiving his second yellow card of the campaign against Romania.
