Police arrest two over alleged assault on officers during Bauchi vehicle check
The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested two men accused of assaulting police officers during a routine vehicle inspection in Bauchi metropolis.
The suspects were identified as a man named Friday, whose surname had not been established, and Yunana Ali.
Police said the incident occurred at about 9am on October 3 along Yelwa Road while officers attached to the E Division Patrol Team were conducting an enforcement exercise under Operation Velvet.
According to Bauchi police spokesperson SP Nafiu Habib, officers stopped a vehicle driven by Friday and requested to inspect its particulars.
Police alleged that the two men refused to produce the requested documents, became hostile and physically confronted members of the patrol team.
During the incident, the uniform of a police inspector was allegedly torn.
The suspects were subsequently taken into custody at the E Division, where investigators opened a case involving allegations of criminal conspiracy, obstruction of public officers on duty, assault and malicious damage.
Bauchi State Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu condemned the alleged attack and urged residents who believe officers have acted improperly to pursue complaints through established legal channels.
The command said the suspects would be charged to court after the investigation is completed.
The accusations remain allegations, and neither suspect has been convicted of an offence in connection with the incident
