The All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly Screening Committee for Enugu State on Monday commenced the screening of aspirants seeking to contest the 2027 Enugu State House of Assembly elections on the platform of the party.

Speaking during a press conference at the APC State Secretariat in Enugu, Chairman of the committee, Comrade Lucky Porki, said the exercise was being conducted on the directive of the national leadership of the party to verify the qualifications, records, and credentials of aspirants vying for the 24 state constituency seats.

Porki disclosed that only 24 aspirants submitted Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for the 24 constituencies in the state, noting that the development had simplified the committee’s assignment.

He, however, assured that the screening would be thorough to ensure that all aspirants met constitutional and party requirements.

The committee chairman praised the leadership of the APC in Enugu State, especially Governor Peter Mbah, the State Executive Committee, stakeholders, and party members for maintaining unity and internal harmony within the party.

According to him, the consensus-building approach adopted by the party in Enugu had strengthened peace, loyalty, and cooperation among members, adding that the state chapter had set an example worthy of emulation by other APC chapters across the country.

Porki maintained that despite the emergence of one aspirant per constituency, the party would strictly adhere to due process in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended, the Electoral Act, as well as the APC constitution and guidelines.

He further disclosed that an Appeals Committee would commence sitting after the screening exercise to entertain complaints and petitions from any aggrieved party member dissatisfied with the outcome of the process.

Speaking earlier, the Enugu State Chairman of the APC, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, welcomed members of the screening committee to the state and commended Governor Peter Mbah for fostering peace and stability within the party.

Chukwunweike said the governor’s leadership had made the party’s electoral processes seamless and rancour-free, adding that the level of unity and cooperation within the APC in Enugu was unprecedented.

He also noted that Governor Mbah, senators, and House of Representatives members on the platform of the party had successfully undergone screening, describing the governor’s acceptability within the APC as unmatched.

The state chairman further praised Mbah’s infrastructure development drive, saying it had become a model worthy of emulation, while attributing the peaceful atmosphere in the party to the governor’s style of leadership.

Meanwhile, members of the Appeals Committee led by its chairman, Dr. Julius Oyiuwa, were also present during the exercise.
