Aston Villa sign João Gomes for £38m from Wolves
Aston Villa have secured the signing of Brazil midfielder João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a transfer valued at £38 million ($51 million).
The 25-year-old international, who has earned 10 caps for Brazil, chose a move to Villa Park over interest from Atletico Madrid.
The agreement includes an initial £34 million fee accompanied by £4 million in performance-related add-ons.
Gomes registered 130 appearances and scored seven goals for Wolves after arriving from Flamengo in 2023. He departs the club following their relegation to the Championship at the end of last season
Speaking on the departure, Wolves technical director Matt Jackson praised the midfielder’s professional attitude:
“Joao deserves everything he gets from the game. He’s the type of professional that coaches love and players love, so he will go on to be the outstanding player that we know he is.”
The arrival of Gomes comes during a significant mid-market overhaul for the Europa League champions.
Villa moved for Gomes after Chelsea agreed to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Unai Emery’s side in a £117 million deal that will set a new record fee for an English player.
Villa also sold Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans to Manchester United earlier in July, while Amadou Onana remains sidelined until next year after sustaining a serious knee injury during the World Cup.
To bolster their attack, Emery previously swooped for Freiburg’s Swiss winger Johan Manzambi in a £50 million transfer that stands as Villa’s new record fee.
