Ugandan football club’s captain killed in street attack

Uganda is mourning the death of football captain David Owori, who was fatally attacked near his home in Kampala in what police described as a suspected robbery.

The 27-year-old defender and midfielder, who captained Sports Club Villa, was attacked in the Makindye area on Tuesday night as he approached his home. Witnesses said a group of suspected robbers struck him with paving stones before taking his belongings and escaping.

Owori was rushed to a nearby medical facility before being transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, where he later died from his injuries.

SC Villa confirmed the death of their captain, describing him as much more than a footballer.

As reported by the BBC on Thursday, “We have lost more than a player – we have lost a leader, brother and friend,” the club said in a statement.

SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye said Owori was ambushed close to his residence.

“The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility,” Kasingye said.

Police said investigations were underway to identify those responsible. Kampala police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said officers were working to gather evidence from the scene.

“The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved,” Kawala said.

Owori, popularly known as “Colgate”, was one of Uganda’s most recognised footballers. He played for SC Villa, one of the country’s most successful clubs, and represented the Uganda national team, the Cranes.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations paid tribute to the late player, calling him a leader both on and off the pitch.

“David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation,” Fufa said.

The Uganda Cranes also expressed their grief, saying the team had lost a player who carried the hopes of the nation.

Owori returned to SC Villa in 2023 after a spell in Europe and helped the club win its 17th Uganda Premier League title in 2024, their first league championship in two decades. His performances earned him a contract extension that was set to run until 2027.

His death has sparked anger and calls for stronger action against violent crime in Kampala. Fans, teammates and political leaders have joined calls for justice as Uganda remembers a player regarded as one of the country’s rising football leaders.
