EPL: Hull City terminate contract of Nigerian player David Akintola

Nigerian winger, David Akintola has departed Hull City following the mutual termination of his contract, ending his tenure at the English club without making an appearance in the Premier League.

The 30-year-old winger has completed a permanent transfer to Cypriot club Omonoia FC after reaching an agreement with Hull City to rescind his contract.

Akintola joined Hull City in August 2025 from Turkish outfit Çaykur Rizespor, securing a move to English football after career stints in Denmark, Norway, Cyprus, and Turkey.

During his debut campaign with the club, Akintola recorded 20 appearances in the EFL Championship, primarily as a substitute, contributing one goal and two assists. His single goal arrived in October 2025, securing a 1-0 victory against Sheffield United.

His final competitive match for Hull City occurred on January 24, 2026, when he featured as a substitute in a 2-1 win over Swansea City. He was subsequently omitted from the squad roster for the middle portion of the season.

Following squad injuries, Hull City successfully appealed to the English Football League for late roster re-registration after midfielder Eliot Matazo suffered a serious knee injury.

The ruling made Akintola eligible for selection ahead of the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium on May 23, 2026, where Hull City secured a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough to earn Premier League promotion after a nine-year absence. Akintola did not feature on the pitch during the match.

Despite being registered for the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, summer recruitment under manager Sergej Jakirović limited Akintola’s prospects for first-team selection, prompting the mutual agreement to terminate his contract ahead of his return to Cyprus.
