Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy retires from international football at 34

Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an eight-year career with the Lions of Teranga.

The 34-year-old announced his decision on social media on Sunday, sharing a video highlighting memorable moments from his international career.

“Jerejef Senegal,” meaning “Thank you Senegal” in Wolof, Mendy wrote alongside the video.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper made his Senegal debut in 2018 under former national team coach Aliou Cissé and went on to establish himself as one of the country’s most prominent players.

Mendy was instrumental in Senegal’s historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Cameroon, helping the Lions of Teranga secure their first AFCON title.

His performances for club and country also earned him international recognition, including being named FIFA’s Best Men’s Goalkeeper in 2022.

At club level, Mendy enjoyed a successful spell with Chelsea after joining the Premier League side from Rennes in 2020.

He helped the London club win the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup before moving to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli in 2023.

Mendy’s international retirement brings the curtain down on a career that saw him represent Senegal in major competitions including the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup.

The Senegalese Football Federation paid tribute to the goalkeeper following his announcement, recognising his contribution to the national team.
