Sowore says he will not seek medical treatment abroad if elected president

African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore says he will not travel abroad for medical treatment if elected president in 2027.

Sowore made the statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed some of the principles he says would guide his administration.

He said he would depend on Nigeria’s healthcare system rather than seek treatment overseas if he became president.

Sowore said any illness that could not be treated in Nigeria should not become a reason for him to travel abroad for medical care.

His remarks come amid longstanding public debate over Nigerian political office holders travelling overseas for medical treatment while the country’s public healthcare system faces challenges involving infrastructure, funding and personnel.

Sowore also said he would not establish or fund an Office of the First Lady if elected, arguing that such an office is not specifically provided for in the Nigerian Constitution.

He maintained that his wife would remain his spouse but would not occupy a publicly funded political office simply because he became president.

Sowore said women would still participate in his administration and argued that government resources should instead be directed toward public services and development.

His comments form part of the positions he is outlining ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
