Michael Kayode says choosing Italy over Nigeria was an ‘easy decision’

Brentford defender Michael Kayode has revealed that he was approached by Nigeria over a possible switch of international allegiance but never seriously considered turning his back on Italy.

The 22-year-old was born in Borgomanero, Italy, to Nigerian parents and is therefore eligible to represent both countries at senior international level.

Kayode, however, has represented Italy throughout the youth ranks and has now received his first senior call-up to the Azzurri.

Speaking ahead of Italy’s upcoming international fixtures, the defender confirmed that the Nigeria Football Federation had contacted him about representing the Super Eagles.

He said remaining with Italy was a straightforward decision because of his long history with the country’s national teams.

Kayode previously played a major role in Italy’s success at the 2023 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, scoring the winning goal in the final against Portugal.

The Brentford defender said receiving his first senior Italy invitation was an emotional moment, particularly after progressing through the country’s various youth teams.

Kayode joined Brentford from Fiorentina initially on loan in January 2025 before the Premier League club made the move permanent.

His latest call-up effectively strengthens his commitment to Italy as he looks to establish himself at senior international level.
