Ronaldo returns to Al-Nassr training after Portugal camp exit
Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to training with Saudi club Al-Nassr following his unexpected departure from Portugal’s national-team camp.
The 41-year-old was pictured smiling as he trained with his club teammates in Riyadh after several days of uncertainty surrounding his international future.
Ronaldo had left Portugal’s camp after being an unused substitute in a Nations League victory over Norway and amid disagreement over his role under head coach Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo left Portugal camp early
Ronaldo departed Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen after speaking with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.
He said he would explain the reasons behind his decision at the appropriate time.
Reuters reported that Jesus and Proença later went to the airport in an attempt to persuade the Portugal captain to remain with the squad, but he departed on a private flight.
The incident raised questions about Ronaldo’s international future.
However, neither Ronaldo nor the Portuguese federation has announced his retirement from international football.
Portugal leaves door open for Ronaldo
Jesus has since said Ronaldo remains welcome to return to the national team if he makes himself available.
The Portuguese Football Federation has also described the situation as a misunderstanding and stressed Ronaldo’s importance to the national side.
Portugal secured their place in the Nations League quarter-finals during Ronaldo’s absence.
The veteran forward remains Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer with 146 goals in 234 appearances, according to Reuters.
Focus switches to Al-Nassr
Ronaldo has now returned to Al-Nassr as the Saudi side prepares to resume its domestic campaign.
His next club assignment is expected to be against Al-Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League.
The Al-Nassr captain has not publicly indicated whether his return to club football signals any permanent decision about his Portugal career.
