No money to pay off Peseiro if we sack him, says NFF board member

Published

Nse Essien, a board member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), says Jose Peseiro, Super Eagles head coach, has not been sacked because the federation cannot afford the severance payment.

Essien spoke with journalists after the Eagles’ 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in their second game of the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.

The result left Nigeria winless in the qualifiers, having previously drawn Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio stadium last week.

The performances have generated a lot of criticism for Peseiro, while some social media users called for his sack.

Addressing the situation, Essien said the top brass at the NFF are also “not happy” with the Portuguese and his latest streak of results with the Eagles.

He claimed Peseiro was employed by the sports ministry and not the NFF, and “not paid a dime” have been paid to the Portuguese.

“If you check the internet, almost everyone is asking for the sack of the head coach. It is unfortunate that out of six points, we have just two, and we have found ourselves in a precarious situation,” the NFF board member said.

“When you say NFF should sack the head coach, we didn’t employ him. This regime didn’t employ him when you come to look at it; it was the Sports Ministry that employed him.

“Up till now, we were supposed to have paid their salaries, but up till now, they have not paid a dime.

“When you now sack him, who pays for compensation? That is the situation we find ourselves in. Not a dime has been paid to this coach, who earns about $70,000 every month.

“We have to respect his [Jose Peseiro’s] contract. If we had the money to give to him [pay him off], why wouldn’t we relieve him? We are not happy.”

World record holder Tobi Amusan has been selected as the country’s flagbearer for the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

This appointment marks a historic moment for Nigerian athletics, as Amusan becomes the first track and field athlete in two decades to receive this honour.

A tweet by Making of Champions on social media platform X on Tuesday said, “Tobi Amusan has been named as Nigeria’s flagbearer for the opening ceremony of #Paris2024 #Olympics – she becomes the first athlete from Athletics in 20yrs, since Mary Onyali at the Athens 2004 Games, to have such honours.”

Amusan, known for her outstanding performances in the 100m hurdles, will lead the Nigerian contingent during the parade of nations at the opening ceremony.

This recognition comes as a testament to her achievements and her status as one of Nigeria’s most prominent athletes on the global stage.

In addition to Amusan’s appointment, the Nigerian Olympic Committee has made another key selection for the country’s Olympic team.

The post further stated, “In another appointment, the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) also announced Badminton player, Anuoluwapo Opeyori as the General Team captain for Nigeria in Paris.”

These appointments set the stage for Nigeria’s participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Some players of the Super Falcons of Nigeria escaped an elevator crisis in Bordeaux, France on Saturday.

In a now-viral video of the incident, at least seven players were trapped in the malfunctioned elevator awaiting help at Hotel Mercure in Bordeaux.

The Super Falcons are representing Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics women’s football event.

The team arrived in Bordeaux on Thursday from Sevilla, Spain, where they had been fine-tuning preparations for the Olympics.

While returning to their hotel rooms, however, the players were stuck in the elevator for minutes due to a technical glitch.

“God abeg o,” a player retorted in pidgin English as they awaited an emergency rescue that arrived minutes into the video.

“If I survive this one, see that stares, if I no pieces am,” another player promised as they were being evacuated from the elevator.

Asisat Oshoala, Tochukwu Oluehi, and Uchenna Kanu were some of the players identified in the footage.

The Paris 2024 Olympics will begin on June 26 with an opening ceremony on the Seine River in Paris. The Super Falcons will face Brazil in their opening match on the same day in Bordeaux.

Randy Waldrum’s Falcons are drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Spain and Japan.

D’Tigress of Nigeria were defeated 77-63 by Germany in a preparatory game ahead of the forthcoming Paris Olympics.

Nigeria failed to match up against the Germans, who showed their superior class in the game played on Friday in Berlin, Germany.

Rena Wakama, D’Tigress head coach, named a starting line-up that comprises skipper Amy Okonkwo, Elizabeth Balogun, Ezinne Kalu, Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah, and Murjanatu Musa.

D’Tigress were impressive in the first quarter, but their brilliance waned by the second quarter, and Germany led 40-31 at halftime.

The Germans reinforced their superiority in the following quarters and finished the game with a 14-point victory.

Nigeria will play another test match against Serbia in Belgrade on July 21, then wrap up the preparatory stage against Japan on July 24 in Lille, France.

D’Tigress are drawn into tough Group B against Australia, Canada, and France.

The appearance in Paris will be the third time D’Tigress will be qualifying for the Olympic Games.

The ladies qualified for Athens 2004 and featured at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

D’Tigress are yet to register a win in the competition. In 2004, they lost all five games and conceded over 400 points.

In Tokyo, they were defeated 87-62 by France in their first game and also lost 81-72 to the US in their second game before a 102-83 loss to Japan in the last fixture.
